Re: Nick Gibb, champion of Systematic Synthetic Phonics in England

As Theresa May has been appointed the new Prime Minister for the UK, a major cabinet reshuffle worried those of us who are well aware that 'phonics' promotion has been hugely driven by Nick Gibb. Would he lose his job? Read the update about Nick Gibb's position in government here: http://www.iferi.o...

England: Justine Greening new Sec of State for Education and Nick Gibb stays as Minister for Schools

Nick Gibb, Minister of State for schools in England, has been one of the most significant figures in the promotion of Systematic Synthetic Phonics and in the introduction of the statutory Year One Phonics Screening Check. It could be a disaster for phonics if Nick had been sacked along with former S...

Re: "Teaching Literacy in Finland"

Re: More Videos Are Needed

OK - with the need for videos in mind, we can flag up not just examples of good, evidence-informed practice, we can also flag up footage showing what not to do and explain 'why'. I'm starting with this video of Luke. Luke is clearly adorable. Someone has spent a lot of time teaching Luke the 'names'...

Re: "Teaching Literacy in Finland"

I have watched some of the videos via the link you provided, Dick, and I have found the approach disappointing and entirely unambitious - "odd" as you have described. If anyone has the time and interest, watch the first video footage, for example, and see the mix of phonics with whole word...

Re: More Videos Are Needed

Dick I think the 'feedback' is absolutely key - and if people can move away from the idea that the filming needs to show near-perfect provision - or show any specific programme in the best possible light - then we could more readily encourage the provision of local filming by teachers, tutors and pa...

Re: More Videos Are Needed

Dick - IFERI is in complete agreement that video footage is indeed the way forward and it is our aspiration to provide examples to exemplify the issues raised by the research and classroom findings. One difficulty is finding footage which is 'good enough' and another challenge is the difficulty of d...

Re: BBC documentary on reading: 'B is for Book'. Why is this worrying?

Thanks to Dick, it would appear there is now no time limit to watching this video as it has been uploaded to youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viCYKIRUpaw Here is the 'sales pitch' Dick referred to: Shot over the course of a year in Hackney, London, B Is For Book follows a group of prima...

Re: BBC documentary on reading: 'B is for Book'. Why is this worrying?

Dick, you wrote: The programme was not intended to be a "training film," but it could serve that purpose by posing the question, "What's wrong with this?" From the title through to the ending credits, it's "almost everything. " Which is exactly what I suggested to Sean ...
