What training do volunteers receive who work in schools and support children when they read aloud?

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

Sarah from Norfolk made a very interesting and important posting on the Reading Reform Foundation message forum about the recruitment and training of volunteers to support and hear children read aloud in schools.

You can read about the project and the 'issues' related to this here:

http://rrf.org.uk/messageforum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6257

[Please note, I have replaced the link above as the original did not lead to the correct forum - so please ensure that you have visited the thread via the Reading Reform Foundation because the technique of 'volunteer' reading helpers is a very pertinent one which we have not yet addressed!

So, the heart of this issue is whether volunteer readers perpetuate 'multi-cueing reading strategies' when these amount to guessing the words on the page in preference to, or in addition to, phonics decoding.

Further, do volunteer reading helpers receive any training, or guidance, via their organisations and/or via the schools they visit?

If so, what does it consist of?
