Gordon Askew: Enough time to talk about books?

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

IFERI committee member, Gordon Askew, writes another posting via his informative blog 'ssphonix':

Enough time to talk about books?

This morning The Bookseller reported that:

More than half of primary school pupils in the UK don’t have enough time to talk about books in the classroom, according to research released today (16th June) by Oxford University Press (OUP).

Although the OUP survey was small (349 teachers), my experience suggests that it is probably a fairly reasonable representation of the situation nationally.

However this worrying state of affairs is not, as I suspect many would attribute it, most directly related to the demands of an 'imposed curriculum' or the current 'regime of (over)testing.' It is, rather, a reflection on the leadership and management of many of our primary schools.

Shock horror. What is this person saying?
Do read the full post, then spend some time reading Gordon's other postings which are excellent.
