Barbara Bush - The World Mourns the Loss of a Great Advocate for Literacy

The World Mourns the Loss of a Great Advocate for Literacy

The work of First Lady of the United States Barbara Bush to improve the literacy skills for all children and adults began in 1989 when her husband was Vice President of the United States under President Ronald Reagan. In 1991, newly elected United States President George H.W. Bush signed the National Literacy Act into law. That law established the National Institute for Literacy www.nifl.org with the objective of helping who had failed to be taught the basic skill of reading proficiently as children, learn these skills as adults. For nearly 20 years NIFL was in the forefront of literacy advocacy for all and became a national and international resource on how children and adults learn to read proficiently.

Mrs. Bush then established her own Foundation to carry on her work of advocating “family literacy” where parents and children could access books to read to their children. She was determined to provide access to the worlds of good books to everyone she could.

Her work was then carried on by her son George W. Bush when he because President of the United States in 2000. The 2000 No Child Left Behind Act included federal programs such as the Struggling Readers Act, the Early Reading First Act and Reading First Act that complimented the work Mrs. Bush continued with her Foundation. Her work continues unabated nearly 30 years later.

Her determination, love for children and the establishment of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Literacy will be a living testimony for decades yet to come. Untold numbers of children and adults will master the skill of reading because Barbara Bush cared for them.
