Scotland: Anne Glennie despairs about Reading Recovery launch in Scotland

Postby Debbie_Hepplewhite » Tue Aug 21, 2018 11:38 am

I have been contacted by teachers and parents in England re their concern about Reading Recovery entrenched in their local authority or in their child's school.

Now Anne Glennie flags up her despair via Twitter re the launch of Reading Recovery in Scotland:

I actually feel physically sick reading this 'news' about Reading Recovery launching in Scotland. No longer funded in its place of birth (New Zealand) but we're lapping it up here. #despair http://www.gtcs.org.uk/News/teaching-sc ... overy.aspx … @tombennett71

The introduction of Reading Recovery is not the answer for children who are struggling more than others to read and spell. Reading Recovery is designed on the basis of methods which have been shown to damage children's reading habits (multi-cueing word-guessing).

Anne Glennie has flagged up this item about one boy's struggles and his mum's fight to challenge the state of affairs in South Ayrshire. This is all related to teachers not being informed or trained well enough in research-informed reading instruction.

The problem which I highlight over and again is that it is chance as to 'what' information (or misinformation) teachers receive and it is chance as to what reading instruction children receive - but it should not be like this.

Here is just one child who has been betrayed by the educational system when teachers are not trained well enough:

Tom and Hilary Burkhard write about the mistake of official promotion of Reading Recovery in England - this dates back to 2009 with reference to the 'Every Child a Reader' initiative which is still persisting in some authorities to this day in England:
