Phonics can eliminate child illiteracy

Dr Marlynne Grant, Registered Educational Psychologist, September, 2018
Well-meaning authors, media people and charities often make the headlines, concerned about the scandal of child illiteracy. Frequently the cause is seen in terms of impoverished communities who are unable to provide the experience of books and literature for their children. The solution is seen in terms of providing such experience and practice with books. Certainly books are very important and can provide motivation to learn to read in the first place. However, they do not provide the initial teaching which enables children to take the first steps. There is massive research which has informed current best practice in how to teach young children to read and write.
