Gambia: Press Release: Phenomenal Phonics award for Farato
On Friday, 23rd November, the pupils and teachers of Yalding Basic Cycle were proud to applaud one of their teachers, Mrs. Darbonding Darboe, as she received a Certificate of Achievement – awarded by Debbie Hepplewhite, MBE, the director of Phonics International. Mrs. Darboe has gained DISTINCTION in two areas of teaching phonics: (1) training Gambian teachers and (2) teaching her pupils through Grade 1 – 6 in a detailed and systematic approach to learning to read, involving sounding, blending, segmenting, spelling and writing.
Phonics International is based in UK but operates around the world: in South America, the Far East and in Africa. Mrs. Darboe’s triumph in gaining an international award cannot be underestimated but much more importantly, the pupils and teachers of Yalding BC School are the ones who benefit from her skills and hard work.
Be on the look out for more ground breaking news as Mrs. Darboe leads her team of colleagues forward into writing and launching a new individual reading scheme for all Gambian government schools. Gambian First Readers is designed for pupils in Grade 1 and is based on a purely phonics approach to helping children read independently.
