This report indicates that even in England, where systematic synthetic phonics provision is statutory and described in the National Curriculum, it is looking like there are still many weaknesses in phonics training and provision, according to teachers' own comments.

Bear in mind, however, that the Department for Education in England continues to roll out literacy initiatives including the funding of phonics training and materials.

There are now 34 regional 'English Hubs' - schools with high levels of literacy - each overseeing 20 weaker schools (680 schools across England); a national council to oversee the project, and a national training centre to roll out national training, collate results and oversee the whole initiative.
