Phonics stalwart, Bruce Deitrick Price, points out the ludicrous scenario of the battles over reading instruction, and in doing so flags up the important work of the amazing Bob Sweet Jnr who sadly died in July 2019:
Fake reading instruction was always a conspiracy. Obviously

3) A few days ago I visited a blog by phonics crusader Nora Chahbazi, and commented that anti-phonics professors seem to play the same trick over and over. They reformulate their arguments with new jargon and sucker the phonics people into debating the same points year after year. I was struck, as if for the first time, by the wasteful idiocy of this.
4) Yesterday, another part snapped into place. Robert Sweet, President (and Co-Founder) of the National Right to Read Foundation, passed away in July. He was one of the smartest guys in education and one of the nicest. A Virginia gentleman. I wondered what would become of his operation and checked the site. Not sure how, I landed in an older version of the site (nrrf.org/old). There, featured on the homepage, was “The Most Obvious Conspiracy in the History of the World.” What an honor. I thought to myself, if Robert Sweet likes this thing, it's good.
I read it over and wondered some more: so HOW do they get away with it? As noted, the phonics people continually got down in the mud with people who are basically intellectual gangsters, in my opinion. They are the pigs in Animal Farm. (Everyone should learn to read equally but some people should learn to read more equally than others.) But how do the pigs control the narrative?

5) Serendipity often helps. Looking at Robert Sweet’s comprehensive 1996 article “Illiteracy: An Incurable Disease or Education Malpractice?,” I learned this startling clue: “The International Reading Association estimates that more than one thousand research papers are prepared each year on the subject of literacy, and that is very likely a low figure. For the past 50 years, America's classrooms have been used by psychologists, sociologists, educationists, and politicians as a giant laboratory for unproven, untried theories of learning, resulting in a near collapse of public education.” One thousand!?
