The Reading League Conference theme and proposals

“Advancing Evidence Into Practice: Effective Reading Instruction Begins With US!”

Many decades of research have revealed the importance of teacher knowledge in relation to reading achievement. We believe that enhancing educator knowledge, rather than focusing on specific methods and programs, is what empowers educators to become highly effective instructors of reading for all students. Proposals related to evidence-based reading instruction and educator knowledge can include, but are not limited to, the following:

Reading instruction and development
Dyslexia
Assessment
Systematic reform of reading instruction
Reading instruction for special populations and similar topics
Practitioner-focused workshops

Presentations and workshops will be 75 minutes in length (including time for questions).

Abstracts should be limited to 180 words.

Proposals are limited to 1000 words and should include the following: 1) title of the presentation or workshop (10 word maximum), 2) session description (75 word maximum), 3) proposed learning objectives, 4) synopsis that includes evidence supporting the practice, as well as implications and future directions of your topic.

Please include: names and institutional affiliations of presenter(s) and a one-paragraph biography for each.

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

● Relevance and significance of the topic to teaching or the assessment of reading

● Strength of evidence supporting the topic/presentation

● Connection to the conference theme

● Clarity of proposal

Please note that as a non-profit organization, The Reading League is not able to reimburse conference presenters for any expenses. Presenters must register for the conference and assume any costs associated with travel and boarding.

Anticipated audience: We expect 450 attendees. Last year’s conference attracted a balanced audience of educators, administrators, and specialists, and we expect the same this year.

Venue: The hotel is the historic former Hotel Syracuse, which was fully renovated into a premiere hotel and conference center in 2016. There are a variety of breakout room sizes and styles. For more information, go to http://marriottsyracusedowntown.com/mee ... oor-plans/

Questions regarding proposal submissions should be directed to: Dr. Michelle Storie, Conference Chairperson, at thereadingleague@gmail.com.
