Intervention for older student's literacy problems - Dr Kerry Hempenstall

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

The topic of intervention needs - identification and provision - has come up via the DDOLL network and, as always, the incredibly knowledgeable Dr Kerry Hempenstall was able to provide links to some research findings:

Teacher, Jacqui Moller-Butcher kindly provided a guest-post for my blog The Naked Emperor describing findings of 'look-alike reading' (word guessing) in her experience of pupils in KS 2 (juniors) and KS 3 (secondary) in England's context.

Bear in mind that 'Systematic Synthetic Phonics' (SSP) and the 'Simple View of Reading' have been adopted officially in England's context since the world-renowned Rose Review (2006) - an independent review of the teaching of early reading commissioned by the, then, government. Despite this promotion and adoption of SSP, how many children continue to slip under the radar. I wrote some time ago about the Department for Education abandoning the idea of a Year 3 phonics check so what does happen to learners who have not yet grasped well enough sufficient alphabetic code knowledge, phonics decoding (synthesising, or blending) and attention to the detail of all the letters and letter groups in printed words?

Jaqui's findings:
