Dr Jennifer Buckingham has written an extremely important report Focus on phonics - why Australia should adopt the year 1 phonics screening check. This describes and builds on the work accomplished in England to promote evidence-informed systematic synthetic phonics including the introduction of a statutory Year One Phonics Screening Check.
Jennifer makes five recommendations regarding the introduction of a similar check in Australia - but this has implications for uptake of an infant phonics check in all English-speaking countries and contexts where English is taught for reading.
