UK: Tom Bennett recommends evidence-informed ITT

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

Tom Bennett, director of researchED (a hugely popular educational community focused on being informed by research that has 'taken off' quickly and internationally) has put forward a proposal for Initial Teacher Training:

I am particularly pleased to see that Tom has mentioned 'phonics' as deserving of its own strand listed in the 'Secondary Aims' section!
•Phonics: important enough to deserve a separate strand – all teachers should know how this works and why it matters.
Phonics tends to be associated only with infant teaching and for beginners and intervention. I have long since maintained that all teachers should be knowledgeable about the complex English alphabetic code and the phonics skills and sub-skills to be able to teach phonics as required, but to be able to support with reading and spelling, as required, regardless of age.

Well done, Tom, and colleagues!
