This amazing little girl is using the hand action that I actually suggest for decoding (print-to-sound for reading) rather than tallying the identified sounds all-through-the-spoken-word to thumb and fingers for encoding that I recommend as a hand action for spelling instruction (that is, for children aged 4+) - but regardless, this is fabulous footage of oral segmenting (a sub-skill of spelling/encoding):

Here you can see some really young children practising their decoding skill (from print to sound) for reading - they are 'sounding out and blending' to read words and sentences. Note, also, that the little girl can see letters and say their sounds with both lower case letters and upper case letter shapes. Many people are not really clear that capital letters are the same code as their lower case letters and teaching this needs to be factored into the teaching. Phonics teaching sometimes (often) neglects the teaching of capital letters as alphabetic code:
