Brief history of phonics and reading instruction

Did you know that in 1655, French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented synthetic phonics. (Rodgers, 2001) Pascal's synthetic phonics referred to an approach associated with the teaching of reading in which phonemes (sounds) associated with particular graphemes (letters) are pronounced in isolation and blended together (synthesised).
