Isabelle Lee: Help! What Are Phonics? A Confused Parent's Guide

Post by Susan Godsland »

I was delighted to find this article, written by a parent, which contains *accurate* information about synthetic phonics teaching.
What a change and what a joy! Added bonus: it recommends Debbie's programme.

The fact that you are reading this means that you successfully learnt to read, probably without the use of phonics. You may feel that synthetic phonics looks like a much more complicated way to teach reading and writing, and that if it is confusing to you, how will a child understand it? In fact, synthetic phonics is an easier and more logical way for your child to learn.

Also, if you feel up to teaching a bit of 'incidental phonics' as might be appropriate or required, you could use these tips:

http://www.phonicsinternational.com/Deb ... g_Tips.pdf

But please don't ruin story-reading or sharing a story by trying to do lots of incidental phonics teaching - that's not what I'm suggesting!

I'm just trying to make parents aware of some aspects of phonics which might be helpful at some point when children are attempting to read their school reading books, for example.
