Australian of the Year finalist: Tasmanian speech pathologist Rosalie Martin uses communication to transform the lives of prisoners

Tasmanian speech pathologist Rosalie Martin, who offers a pro bono literacy program to local prisoners, said it is a “great honour” to be nominated for Australian of the Year, but admitted she feels “incredibly ordinary”.

For more than three years, Ms Martin has been using her pilot program “Just Sentences” to help teach prisoners at Risdon Prison in Hobart how to read and write.

“We use the expression, ‘if you can’t think out, you’ll act out’ and for some people that acting out tips over into crime and they find themselves in prison,” Ms Martin told 9news.com.au.

“Fifty percent of kids who come into contact with the youth justice system have severe and undiagnosed language disorders,” she said.
