Canada: 'Program dramatically improves reading of at risk students at an early age'

Whilst this is a very good news story from the University of Alberta, it is also dismaying that we have known about the effectiveness of intensive phonics provision including books that match the code taught to date for years.

This encouraging story is both heartwarming and devastating at the same time. Devastating because we should have had this kind of provision in every school teaching the English language for decades and we should not need research projects going over the same old ground which may, or may not, be passed on to other schools:

In only two years, researchers were able to reduce number of Grade 1 children with reading difficulties from 290 to 7.
