Scot: 'Insight 17 - A Seven Year Study of the Effects of Synthetic Phonics Teaching on Reading and Spelling Attainment'

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

The work of Rhona Johnston and Joyce Watson informed the independent national review into the teaching of early reading (2005-6) undertaken by Sir Jim Rose and a team of inspectors in England's context. Sir Jim's report is world-renowned and highly influential in developments in England's context including the adoption of the Simple View of Reading model (Gough and Tunmer 1986) which informs the teaching profession about the two main processes of being a reader in the full sense.

Here is the summary of the seven year study that appears to have influenced England's progress far more than developments in Scotland itself - irony and tragedy:

I'm cross-referencing this thread with one on the 'General Forum' showing how Scotland authorities resist the need to promote and ensure teachers are trained in the 'systematic synthetic phonics teaching principles'.

IFERI committee member, Anne Glennie, has worked tirelessly to raise this issue in Scotland including submitting a petition signed by Sir Jim Rose himself, read about this here:
