Harriett Janetos review of '...An Evidence-Based Approach to T'ing Phonics, R'ing & Wr'ing (Wyse & Hacking)

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

Sorry for all the abbreviations in the title of this post (limited space) - here is the full information:
The Vanishing Act in The Balancing Act

A review of 'The Balancing Act: An Evidence-Based Approach to Teaching Phonics, Reading and Writing by Dominic Wyse and Charlotte Hacking’

by Harriett Janetos, Reading Specialist

Author of From Sound to Summary: Braiding the Reading Rope to Make Words Make Sense

https://highfiveliteracy.com/2024/08/28 ... ncing-act/

Wyse and Hacking's book has drawn attention internationally to the reading debate regarding how best to teach phonics such that Harriett's review, and the review of others featured in Harriett's guest blog via the Five from Five site, make an important contribution to professional understanding.

Below is a link to another thread on the IFERI Forum with further expansion on this topic including my own thoughts, experiences and suggestions regarding phonics instruction:

Many thanks to Jennifer Chew who has kindly prompted me to edit my original post (above) as I was mixing the two publications and their authorship (now corrected).

Jenny wrote:
We need to avoid confusion between two publications:

1. The 2024 book by Wyse and Hacking which is the subject of Harriett's review, and
2. A 2022 article by Wyse and Bradbury (https://bera-journals.onlinelibrary.wil ... /rev3.3314) which Harriett mentions in her review.
