Nine primary schools in Wandsworth have been praised for achieving excellent results in last summer’s national phonics tests.
The nine schools all achieved virtually perfect scores with nearly every single pupil passing the tests. This success rate puts these schools in the top five per cent of high performing schools nationally.
The schools, with their test scores in brackets, are St George’s (100%); St Anselm’s (100%); Chesterton (97%); Holy Ghost (97%); Honeywell infants (96%); Belleville (96%); John Burns (96%); Alderbrook (96%) and Granard (95%).
The test results measure how well six-year-old pupils can read and understand written words. They are an important element of the national curriculum and key to good writing and reading skills.
The council’s education spokesman Cllr Kathy Tracey said; “These schools have achieved superb results. They are among the best scores in the country in what is an absolutely key area of learning.
